Once you have set a wedding date, and decided on where you will be married and the type of service, the next step is to be familiar with the requirements for your marriage.
Marriage Notice Forms (Form M10) must be completed by the both the Bride and Groom and can be downloaded from the General Register Office for Scotland’s website, or be collected from a District’s Registrar’s Office. Once completed, the form must be submitted in sufficient time for the registrar to be satisfied that you are both free to marry one another. This is usually four weeks before. If either party has been married before, this should be six weeks before. The minimum is 15 days. Completed forms are submitted along with your birth certificates and the appropriate fee. Contact your Districts Registrar’s Office for further information.
The submitted Marriage Notice Form, allows the Marriage Schedule to be released. Usually, the bride or groom will collect the Marriage Schedule, no earlier than 7 days before the wedding date. This is the document you will both sign on the wedding day, and which is returned to the registrar within 3 days of the marriage. The Marriage Schedule is then converted into your Marriage Certificate which is usually posted a few days later.
If you are unsure of requirements for your particular marriage ceremony, essential information can be found on the General Register Office for Scotland's website.
